Energy and Society Workshop

energysociety

Overview: Until recently, the focus of energy research primarily centered on technology and engineering advancements, emphasizing the development of innovative solutions and sophisticated modeling techniques to improve energy reliability and efficiency. Recent advances in the field, however, have highlighted its socio-technical nature and thereby prompted investigations into the social dimensions of energy. The growing body of academic work is looking at the complex interactions and interdependencies of policies, infrastructure, technologies, and human behavior that shape the supply and demand of energy in society. Despite these advances, the techno-focused history has made its mark, leaving a gap in graduate-level courses at the intersection of energy and the social sciences. This research working group therefore acts as a collaborative platform for graduate students to explore and engage with the growing body of literature. It also serves as a supportive community aimed at fostering the advancement of energy and social science research among its members and beyond. The main aim would be to serve as a platform for graduate students to engage in scholarly conversations, readings and discussions on energy and society intersections. It will also function as a support group to advance research of members. Subsequently it could provide a springboard to test and learn with the potential of feeding learnings from this iteration into future courses. Specific objectives are to: 1. Cultivate a community of graduate students and postdocs with a keen interest on the study of energy and society. 2. Compile a comprehensive reading list and facilitate regular discussion sessions to deepen understanding and engagement. 3. Provide a supportive network for the exchange, review, and refinement of writing projects, including outlines and sections of papers, through peer feedback. 4. Encourage the formation of a collaborative research environment where members can exchange research ideas and strategies, assist in drafting grant proposals, and engage in budget planning.
